The National Capital Area Garden Clubs is the 51st State in the National Garden Clubs organization. We were organized in 1951 when gardeners in the Metro DC area wanted to have access to Flower Show Judges accreditation. It is fascinating to look through our documents and learn of the Flower Shows that were held at the DC Armory and the relationship with Woodward and Lothrop (a Washington DC Department Store). The Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs and The Federated Garden Clubs of Maryland worked to create boundaries which became the National Capital Area Garden Clubs.
Our State has 58 clubs divided into four Districts which help facilitate State communications. Each District has an Executive Board which plans at least two meetings a year to provide additional educational opportunities for members. In addition, each District is encouraged to hold either a Flower Show or participate in a Community Project to build strong relationships and collaborations among the clubs in the District.
Members are also encouraged to participate in the National Garden Clubs Schools program: Environmental School, Gardening School, Flower Show School and Landscape Design. When a member completes two courses in one school series they are eligible to join the corresponding Councils which offer educational programing and tours.
