Fall 2011

Welcome to District IV!

Our theme for the 2011-13 Biennium is “Community Stewardship.  We will be working toward this end for the next two years.  Among our projects will be the planting of containers in public places of each club’s choice throughout our Montgomery County community.  Our March 2012 general meeting will feature a presentation by a professional nurseryman/woman on the type of containers and plantings that do well in public places.  Also, knowing that our future will depend upon the education and knowledge of today’s youth, we will be working with schools in Montgomery County through the Master Gardeners program to promote vegetable gardening, either in containers or in ground.

Protecting our beloved Chesapeake Bay is yet another project we will continue to work on by establishing rain gardens and cleaning up streams that flow into these estuaries.  You can start with your own garden and expand through your club activities.

Since we are a community with many retired and active duty service men and women, we will honor their sacrifice and service to our country with a Blue Star Memorial Marker.  Proposed sites include the Crescent Trail and the downtown Bethesda Plaza at Wisconsin Avenue and Old Georgetown Road.

Newsletter editor and Webmaster Paula Knepper will maintain an up to date Calendar on the District IV Website.  If you have events which your club would like to publicize, please inform Paula.

Fall critical dates for District IV Presidents include:  General Meeting, Sept. 2, 2011, 10:00 a.m., at Strathmore Mansion; September 23 Field Trip to Glen Burnie and the Museum of the Shenandoah; Morning of Design (look for an October date); decorate Strathmore Mansion on Nov. 28 at 9:30 a.m.  The NCAGC General Membership Meeting and 60th Anniversary celebration will be held on Sept. 27 at the Plymouth Haven Baptist Church in Alexandria at 10:30 a.m.
